JOL: Amapiano, 3-step, and gqom event series branding

By Felix Pereyra, Designer

JOL was created to represent more than just a party. It’s a feeling rooted in music, culture, movement, and connection. Inspired by Afro House, Amapiano, 3-Step, and Gqom, the name comes from the South African slang word “JOL,” meaning to celebrate and enjoy life. Reimagined as Joy Of Life, the brand captures the energy of African dance music while creating a space centered around community, expression, and shared experiences.

The goal was to build a visual identity for a new event series that felt authentic to its musical roots while connecting with a modern audience. The brand needed to communicate the energy of dance culture, nightlife, and African influence without relying on obvious visual clichés.

A major challenge was developing a logo and identity system that felt simple and timeless while still carrying the cultural depth and movement behind the brand. The design needed to feel like a celebration, something that could live across posters, digital platforms, merchandise, and future experiences.

We explored the visual language surrounding African dance music, studying the movement, rhythm, and community-driven nature of genres like Afro House, Amapiano, 3-Step, and Gqom. This research helped shape a direction focused on energy, connection, and the feeling of being part of a shared moment.

The strategy was to create a flexible identity system that could evolve with each event while maintaining a recognizable foundation.

Our role was to develop the brand strategy and create the complete visual language for JOL. Through exploration and development, we created a logo system that balanced simplicity with cultural expression.

We built a cohesive identity through:

  • Custom logo development
  • Event poster templates
  • Typography direction
  • Custom graphic shapes and elements
  • Character illustrations
  • Color palette development
  • Overall visual guidelines

Every element was designed to reflect the rhythm and movement of the music while giving JOL a unique presence within the event space.

The final identity transformed JOL from an event concept into a recognizable cultural brand. The new visual system created a strong foundation for future events, allowing the brand to consistently communicate its energy, community, and connection to African dance music.

Through a combination of strategy, research, and design, JOL became more than a party. It became a visual representation of the Joy Of Life.
